Peter Brann Assists Pro Bono in Major Environmental Win

Brann & Isaacson lawyer Peter Brann was co-counsel for environmental groups and tribes in lengthy proceedings and public hearings before Maine’s Land Use Planning Commission (LUPC) that resulted in denial of a rezoning application by a Canadian company, Wolfden, which would have allowed mining in northern Maine near Baxter State Park and the Katahdin Woods and Waters National Monument. B&I was pro bono co-counsel for the Natural Resources Council of Maine, Maine Audubon, Conservation Law Foundation, the Penobscot Nation, and the Houlton Band of the Maliseet Indians. This was the first rezoning application considered by the LUPC under Maine’s new mining laws. Brann, assisted by B&I paralegals, helped present the case through cross-examination during three days of technical and public hearings and through numerous written motions, briefs, and letters. In the end, the LUPC found the intervenors’ opposition compelling.
